Football portal back open for business and Terps looking to host SEC OL

The transfer portal is back open for football today and the Terps are one of a number of schools expected to host Arkansas transfer OL Andrew Chamblee, as initially reported by Pete Thamel.

The 6-foot-6, 300 pounder has been expected to enter the portal for some time and did so officially today. He started 8 games for the Hogs last season.

He's expected to visit Maryland this week and also has visits lined up to UCLA this week, Kansas State this weekend and Colorado next weekend for their spring game. Virginia Tech, SMU and Indiana are also involved.

Obviously, good to be one of the first to get him on campus, but this one seems likely to be drawn out a bit.

This does clearly signal, however, that they are still looking to bolster the O-line heading into fall camp. I'd guess more names will pop up between now and the summer.

A note on a top high school hoops recruit....

With all the focus on the transfer portal, we haven't really been able to discuss much the top 2025 prospects the Terps will be after in the coming months.

One top target I wanted to mention is Cam Ward. With Kenny Johnson on board at G'town, you are likely to hear in the coming days/weeks that the Hoyas are better positioned with top Terps target Ward due to his local connections.

I'm here to tell you that is 100% false.

Hoyas head coach Ed Cooley has done an excellent job recruiting Ward and has them squarely in the mix. The belief by just about everyone locally is that Ward will likely stay in the area and play for either the Terps or Hoyas. With that said, I've been told that the addition of Johnson to G'town's staff might actually hurt their chances with Ward, while the addition of Norris for Maryland should have the opposite effect.

Long story short, given the Terps' and Hoyas' most recent coaching additions, I believe this greatly helps the Terps as they prepare to make him a focus over the coming months. And this is coming from someone directly involved in his recruitment.

Also in the transfer portal today (football)

I saw someone already mentioned that long snapper Mason Foundas is in the transfer portal.

Linebacker Ian Maloney also went into the transfer portal today.

For those that might not know who he is, he is from Pa., began his college career at Louisville as a frosh in '21 and spent the past two seasons in College Park.

Do not believe he was on scholarship, so not a big deal in that regard, but just thought I'd pass along as it was passed along to me.

RCS Charlotte OL/DL rumor mill

The latest on a few top Terp targets along the o-line and d-line. One interesting name here is the first one listed, Justin Allen. He's a two-way lineman, 6-foot-4, 290 who plays for LaPlata. Sounds like he had an impressive showing and already has offers from Liberty and ODU. I'd be pretty surprised if Maryland doesn't get involved there.

Also some updates with Jayvon McFadden and 2026 Rivals250 OG Darius Gray out of Richmond.

One other interesting name to keep an eye on, Joppa 2026 edge rusher Zion Elee, another one to keep an close eye on in the future.

Derik Queen officially signed

COLLEGE PARK, MD – After committing to the Terps in February, McDonald's All-American and consensus five-star recruit Derik Queen has officially signed his National Letter of Intent to play for Maryland. Queen, a Baltimore native, is the second-highest rated recruit (No. 12 nationally) to sign with the Terps between five-stars Diamond Stone (No. 8, 2015) and Jalen Smith (No. 15, 2018).

"We are excited to have Derik coming home to be a Terp," said head coach Kevin Willard. "Derik has a tremendous skillset on both sides of the floor. He is a player that wants to make an impact on our program and we think he can do that early in his career."

The 6-foot-10, 245-pound center has played the last three seasons at Montverde Academy in Florida after spending his freshman year at St. Frances Academy. Nationally, he ranked No. 10 overall by ESPN, No. 12 by 247Sports, and No. 15 by Rivals.

Queen led Montverde to a 33-0 record this past season where he led the Eagles with 16.4 points per game and 7.5 rebounds. He was named a MaxPreps Second Team All-American after leading Montverde to the Chipotle National Championship and earned All-Tournament honors.

Over the last two seasons, he averaged 14.3 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. As a freshman at St. Frances, Queen was named the MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year, while as a junior in 2023 was selected to the MaxPreps Junior All-American Honorable Mention Team.

In addition to playing at Montverde, Queen also played AAU basketball for Team Thrill which he led to the Under Armour Association U-17 spring championship in 2023.

Queen was named Co-MVP of the McDonald's All-America Game earlier this month after scoring 23 points while adding eight rebounds, five assists, three steals, and two blocks. He was the first Terp since Adrian Branch to earn MVP honors.

In addition to Queen, the Terps have also previously announced the additions of transfer guards Rodney Rice (Virginia Tech) and Ja'Kobi Gillespie (Belmont) as well as the signing of freshman Malachi Palmer earlier today.

Malachi Palmer officially signs NLI with Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Four-star guard Malachi Palmer has officially signed his National Letter of Intent to play for the University of Maryland. The 6-foot-6, 215-pound guard announced his commitment in January choosing the Terps over Florida State, Oklahoma State, Seton Hall, and West Virginia.

"We're excited to welcome Malachi to the program," said head coach Kevin Willard. "He adds good size and versatility, has the ability to get to the rim, and is a physical guard."

Overall, Palmer is the second ranked recruit from Maryland and the No. 119 overall recruit in the class after playing the last two seasons at Mt. Zion Prep. He started his high school career at Central Dauphin in Pennsylvania before transferring to Hillcrest Prep in Arizona. He also played on the EYBL circuit for Team Melo and NY Renaissance. At Mt. Zion, Palmer crested the 1,000 point plateau as a senior.

As a freshman, Palmer was named a MaxPreps Freshman All-American. He was also a First Team All-Elite Prep League selection as a junior.

This summer he has been selected to play in both the Capital Classic and the Iverson Classic Showcase.

In addition to Palmer, the Terps have also previously announced the additions of transfer guards Rodney Rice (Virginia Tech) and Ja'Kobi Gillespie (Belmont).

Maryland lands commitment from former South Florida guard Selton Miguel

The Terps have picked up a commitment from Selton Miguel. As I mentioned yesterday, had a feeling he'd be the first to pop based on everything I was hearing.

Honestly, of the three, I think Miguel is the best fit as far as shooting, ability to score at all three levels, vision and most importantly defense. Plus he's older and has been around the block. Really like this pickup.

Cal to Arkansas because SMU to ACC

So SMU, who's coach had won the past 2 years, was not enough for their move to ACC, hires USC coach, who's move to B1G, hires Arkansas coach so Arkansas and their Tyson foods money hires Cal from Kentucky. KY wants Oats, hurley and Wright, wonder who they get but others getting big pay raises from this.

Also, those complaining about the portal, the coaches portal is always open

Latest portal rankings...

It is interesting looking at the latest portal rankings at various outlets. Both The Athletic and ESPN updated theirs today. The Athletic has Gillespie at No. 18, while ESPN has him at the No. 55 spot.

The Athletic has Rodney Rice at No. 82, while ESPN simply has him among their 'next in line.'

The Athletic also has Connor Essegian at No. 91 and Bryce Pope at the No. 111 spot. Selton Miguel is not listed. ESPN, meanwhile, has all three of Essegian, Pope and Miguel among their 'next in line.'

The latest with Malik Washington from latest Rivals Camp stop

Adam Friedman caught up with top Terps QB target and Rivals250 prospect Malik Washington at Rivals camp down in Charlotte, immediately following his visit to Virginia Tech for their spring game.

Honestly, not a whole lot about Maryland here, but you get the latest update from the past couple days on what he's feeling, where he's visiting and his current commitment timeline. Still feels like he is Maryland's to lose, but gotta get through all those official visits. And obviously still liking the fact that a commitment is expected in June/July. More at the link below.

The Terps are set to host...

Maryland is set to host former Wisconsin starting guard Connor Essegian for an official visit starting tomorrow.

For those that don't remember, he was a starter as a true freshman a couple of seasons ago and showed a lot of promise, averaging 11.7 points and 3.7 rebounds while shooting 36% from three and nearly 90% from the charity stripe in just over 27 minutes of action per game.

I'll admit, I was really impressed with the kid when I watched him and he seemed like he might have a huge sophomore season. Then Gard brought in St. John's transfer AJ Storr and freshman John Blackwell to get bigger and more athletic and he basically became a bench warmer this season, averaging 3.2 points in just over 7 minutes per game.

If he is willing to compete for a spot at the 2/3 with the expectation he plays maybe 20-plus minutes a game, I think with his outside stroke and previous Big Ten experience he could be a really nice addition. There had been a lot of smoke with regards to Essegian and Michigan and he was expected to visit Ann Arbor at some point this week, also. But I'm hearing that Michigan visit has now been put on the back burner with this Maryland visit now popping up.

While Essegian is visiting College Park, top Terps target Bryce Pope will take an unofficial visit to USC. As I previously mentioned a few days ago, source told me that Musselman targeted Pope as a guy he wanted very early on with the expectation that he'd end up at USC. Musselman just landed UPenn transfer PG Clark Slajchert, who is originally from LA. Again, Musselman reached out early on seemingly with the idea he'd likely be at USC. But while he's added a couple of guys through the portal already, Mussleman has a ton of spots to fill and a ton of playing time to offer as the previous roster has been completely gutted.

As of now, I'd still expect Pope to visit Maryland officially as scheduled, and the Terps have a real shot here, but again, USC is a serious threat and will have him on campus this week.

Reading the tea leaves with regards to Essegian, quickly setting up this Maryland visit and the Michigan visit now in question while Pope is at USC has me thinking that it is possible he commits while on his visit.

They have also held talks with South Florida transfer Selton Miguel who averaged 14.7 point, 3.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game this past season. USF won the AAC this past season and Miguel was 2nd team All-AAC and 6th man of the year. He has good size at 6-foot-4 and shot 39% from three this past season. Providence and Michigan two other schools I've heard are very much in the mix. Terps have a connection in that he's from Angola, the home of former Terp and current NBA big man Bruno Fernando.

Observations for last night's Lacrosse game

Took 3 of the grandson last night to the game. Remind me to make sure they eat before taking them next time. Did not believe how much they inhaled.

1. Early in the game the defense seemed to be confused on switches that cost them 2 goals. That got straightened out at halftime and did not see it in second half.

2. Secondary scorers really stepped-up last night with Kelly, Siragusa and Brennan scoring.

3. Rutgers did a great job on Spanos. He only got a couple of good lucks, but never scored.

4. The Terps missed Maltz. He is their finisher. Always seems to find that opening in front of the net.

5. Where has Owen Murphy gone. No goals and 3 turnovers. Two years ago, he looked like a future star.

6. The Big10 needs replays. Just ask Rutgers about the no goal 7th goal.

7. I can do without the flashing lights after Terp goals.

MLAX: Second half surge leads No. 4 Terps past Rutgers, 11-6

COLLEGE PARK, MD – In a game that featured five first-half lead changes, No. 4 Maryland men's lacrosse used a second-half surge to defeat Rutgers, 11-6, at SECU Stadium on Saturday. With the win, Maryland (8-3, 3-1 B1G) clinched a top-two seed in the Big Ten Tournament and secured a bye in the quarterfinals.

Maryland and Rutgers (7-5, 1-3 B1G) traded goals early but the Terps capitalized on its momentum coming out of the locker room. Braden Erksa and Jack Koras netted goals under the two-minute mark to grab a 6-4 lead at halftime, the largest lead of the game up to that point. Maryland proceeded to outscore Rutgers 5-2 in the second half, including four unanswered in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

Daniel Kelly scored a season-high three goals and recorded the sixth hat trick of his career. He also recorded a game-high and season-high four points.
Koras and Ryan Siracusa each supplied two goals and an assist. Erksa added one goal and an assist and Eric Malever created for his teammates with two assists.

The Maryland defense held Rutgers scoreless for the first 14:10 of the game and 15:52 spanning through the second and third quarters. Goalie Logan McNaney made a season-high 15 saves and six different Terps caused a turnover.
