WBB: Terps top Green Bay in Cancun

CANCUN, MEXICO -- In their second of three games in the Cancun Challenge, the Terps earned a hard-fought, gritty win over Green Bay, 68-59

After trailing early, Maryland carried a one-point lead into the third quarter thanks to a pivotal third-quarter buzzer beater from Riley Nelson. Early fourth-quarter points from Shyanne Sellers and Bri McDaniel helped the Terps (3-3) create separation from the Phoenix (3-2) and they never surrendered it from there.

McDaniel was a major spark plug off the bench for the Terps all afternoon, finishing with a career-high 19 points, including an 11-for-12 performance at the line. Sellers was superb once again in a fantastic all-around performance where she notched 23 points, nine rebounds and six assists.

Freshman Riley Nelson was also huge off the bench and finished with a career-high nine points. Maryland finished with a 30-20 advantage in bench points.

The Terps played big on the boards all game, out-rebounding the Phoenix 57-33 and snatching 16 offensive rebounds. Jakia Brown Turner's game-high and career-high 13 boards were pivotal.

Breaking Down The Action


  • The Terps clawed back from an early deficit, out–scoring Green Bay 18-13 in the second quarter to cut it to 30-29 at halftime.
  • The Terps earned 11 trips to the line and corralled 29 rebounds (11 on the offensive end) in the first half alone. Bri McDaniel scored 10 first-half points to lead the way.
  • Maryland finished the third quarter on a 6-2 run, highlighted by a Riley Nelson jumper at the buzzer to go on top for the first time all game, 45-44.
  • Sellers and McDaniel continued to come up with big buckets and helped propel the Terps to a fourth-quarter run to seal the lead.


Double-Figures Factors


  • Shyanne Sellers' 23 points marked the 46th time she reached double-digit scoring in her career and the fifth in six games this season.
  • Bri McDaniel scored 19 points and reached double-digits for the third time this season and fifth time of her career.
  • Jakia Brown-Turner scored in double-digits for the 72nd time of her career and fifth time this season with 10 points.
